God, Gold, and Glory

What do you think were the top five motives (reasons) 15th and 16th century Europeans went on voyages of exploration? Explain your answers.

1. Spreading Christianity
The Church and the government encouraged converting natives and nations. In the hope of favor by god.

2. Colonizing
Growing and expanding their nation, this made more food, taxes, people, slaves, recruitment.

3. Finding new Trading routes
Since Solayman blocked Asia from Europe explores where forced to sail westward in the hope of circling the globe and getting to Asia.

4. Adventure/Title
Sailors and Captins volunteered for these expeditions for the fame and adventure. And where lead by mans curiosity.

5. Nation Pride
Nation Pride this is some what like the space race. And how America and Russia where racing to get to the moon it was the same with the explores just it was discovering the new world. This showed off a countries power and strength. Really good for intimidation.

From all of this came the title or saying "God, Gold, and Glory."

The Scientific Method

The Scientific method is almost a How-To-Guide to how you should conduct a scientific experiment.

  1. First of all you start of with a question you want to ask, or Identify some sort of problem.
  2. Then you do some research on what your question is asking or the problem.
  3. You then want to make a Hypothesis, this is basically an educated guess at what you think is the answer.
  4. Then to test your Hypothesis you can conduct an experiment.
  5. Once you have completed you experiment you then must analyze your results and and make a conclusion.
  6. Finally see if your Hypothesis was correct or not, and report you results.

Why do we still use the Scientific Method?
The answer is, because it works. For over 1000 years scientists have used similar methods to conduct scientific experiments. There is no real flaw in the method, so it has continually worked.
And that is why it is still used, it works.

Johann Tetzel vs Martin Luther

J0hann Tetzel: He is making a marketing campaign that the sale of indulgences is good and will remove all punishment for one sin. And instead of waiting in purgatory you will have less time till you can go to heaven. Then he describes that people trust brokers with their money so they can trust the Church that they can clear their sins.

Martin Luther: He is talking about how he use to think god was an angry being and that he wanted to punish. But he later realized that he is not angry or mad but more like a father looking over everyone trying to help us. And just having faith in him will open the gates to heaven.

Basically Johann is saying that god is harsh and will punish you for your sins. All thought he may not believe it, he is using it for his campaign for the sale of indulgences. While Martin is saying that god loves us all and he is here to help us all and we should just have faith in him not buy indulgences or do good deeds.

"Blood alone moves the wheels of history." - Martin Luther

I think this quote means that we only remember violence, sacrifice and war about the past. And that the most significant things that people learn about the past is related to war. But in recent times this isn't necessarily true for example their have been thousands of inventions that have been remembered for their importance over time like the invention of plastic, cars, planes, the internet, phones etc... and they are not related to war. But it does seem that the most significant events in history relate to sacrifice and war.

The Sale of Grade Points (ISB indulgences)

I felt that there was no way the school would actually consider people would be OK with this and that it was so corrupt. No the school shouldn't sell grades it defeats the whole purpose of school because if you are rich you can get top grades and learn nothing or do nothing. It was similar to how the rich could buy indulges and get higher in the church for just money not there actual beliefs or ideas. And with these grade tickets the rich could get higher in the school not because of their intelligence but their money.

"All the World's a Stage" - William Shakespeare

Well this is basically saying the whole world is just a stage. To me I think he is just trying to say that us humans, are the actors and we all live and play our roles. While some are more important than others. We all eventually finish our roles (death). The play on the stage can funny, tragic, or serious. He is saying that life is like a play and one play mite end a new on starts on the same stage.

Beauty

Consider this quote from Castiglione's The Courtier:
"Outer Beauty is the true sign of inner goodness."
Explain what this quote means to you. How do you know this? Do you agree/disagree with this quote?

Back during the Renaissance, life was all about looking good and trying to make your self attractive on the outside. They would try to bring out their personalities through their clothing and behavior. But i think only in the last while, 80 years or so people have began to disagree with this quote. While someone can be attractive but could be less intelligent than that of an unattractive person. Just because you look nice doesn't mean you are nice. I strongly disagree with this quote because people can be unattractive but the nicest person you have ever met.

"The end justifies the means." - Machiavelli

Humanities 8B
I interpreted this quote as, if we do something we can only understand why we did it after it has been done. So in a way like we could think we have a clear goal and that what we want, but once we have reached that goal it isn't what we expected or wanted so its almost like that other quote, "Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it." Thats what I think it means.

What is History and why do we study it?

History is everything that happened, took place, and was in the past. It involved culture, people, ideas, and places.
The reason I love studying history so much is because everyday I notice more and more references to history. For example the other day I was researching quotes, I stumbled upon a writer named Mark Twain. I read around 100 of his quotes and I was amazed at his beliefs. So I went to Wikipedia just to get some background info on him. When I say when he was born I was shocked. He was born in 1835 and died in 1910. I thought that Mark Twain was around 50 and still alive because of how his quotes described today. For example he has this one quote, "We have the best government money can buy." Mark Twain. I realized this by reading in between the lines from movies, news, show, books, etc... he knew this more than 100 years ago without the help of those things.

The more I learn about the past I feel that I understand more. Living in Kuwait and learning there history gave me a great in depth sight to the middle east and how they live. And whenever I go back to Canada my cousins have such a stereotypical knowledge on them, that they don't understand them and would most likely be afraid to travel their or not have a Muslim friend. Ultimately these choices make massive impacts on their lives. It restricts them to what they can do. It creates frustration because the do not get what other cultures mean and it almost always ends in conflict.

Its also good to study history because you can always pull out facts or ideas for helping you in almost any situation. Also it helps creating new or improved ideas because you can make creations based of past failures.

Those are just some of the few examples at why history is important and should be studied.

Marlowe - Shakespeare

I still think It was Marlowe overall because him being a spy for the queen explains a lot of what he was able to do and his knowledge and understanding about plays, literature, royalty and Italy. He also had a collage education explaining why he could write plays well. Also he spent a lot of his life around royalty and lived in Italy explaining why a lot of Shakespeare's plays where about Italy and royalty. There is more evidence that explains Marlowe was Shakespeare than any other candidate in my opinion.

Charlemagne

Charlemagne was born in 747 April and died the 28th of January. He was the holly roman emperor that conquered most of Europe. He participated in the Lombard War (773-775); the Spanish War (778-801); the conquest of Bavaria (787-788); the conquest of the Avars (791-801); the Byzantine War (802-812). thorough this he united Europe and began the Middle ages. The reason he is so important is because he almost made the government system of western civilization by introducing trails and juries, he brought back education into the the middle ages and united Europe.

The Crusades

The people in Europe thought that they were for gaining back the holly land (Jerusalem), but really it was so that the church would rise in popularity and that they could gain power. The crusades coast lots of money so the churched down graded the wealth of kings and nobles making them even more powerful. This in a way united Europe against a common enemy through the crusades which brought them 1 step further out of the dark ages.

I felt that it was a lot of work and there was little time till the presentation. But after all the practicing it wasn't so bad. When it came to the real day I got very nervous and felt like I was going to mess up. We did the first dance with no mistakes and then my class played Base-danse. This was the least difficult out of all the songs for me. Act 1 went well and so did the rest of the play when it came to my part I was very nervous and felt like I was choking up but after all of It I was relived that it was over.

How did geography and trade contribute to the growth of the Muslim Empire, the spread of Islam and the achievements of the Golden Age?

If you look at a map of the middle east you see that it is mostly desert. In modern times it doesn't really effect us, but around 1500 years ago this effected the people who lived their greatly. Because of the harsh climate and terrain, it made it hard to grow crops and raising domesticated animals. Because of these factors it made it almost impossible to stay in one place, so their solution to this was becoming nomadic. Nomadic means never staying one place for a long period of time, always traveling from destination to destination, "Living of the land."

Later on these nomadic people would be called the Bedouins. They lived by traveling from oases to oases, since they provided water and shelter from the desert. After some time these oases became villages and trading points for nomadic people. Later on the middle east became completely dependent on trade since they where in the perfect place to trade from the byzantine empire to the Indian empire making them rich and prosperous. When Muhammad started speaking of the Muslim faith it spread around rapidly because of how it appealed to the poor and excluded and how since trade spread knowledge and ideas around.
The spread of Islam was slow at first because some people didn't like the idea of one true god, so the Muhammad and his followers where ostracized from trading points and settlements, except for one town were he was invited by the leader. There the Muhammad and his followers took refuge. A pagan tribe of 1000 fought the Muslims with only 300. Surprisingly the Muslims won and continued to conquer towns and cities soon they became 10,000 strong and took mecca. This was the beginning of the Muslim empire.

1. (A) The Desert.
(B) Since traders would travel in the desert from oasis to oasis, good points for trade where oases and cities.
(C) Because staying in one place they would eventually run out of food and water so they had to move and live of the land, basically moving from oasis to oasis.

2. (A) Muhammad was born in 570 A.D. Since his family was poor he traveled a lot, trading. When he was 40 he was in a cave when an angel spoke to him and told him the word of god.
(B) That there is only one true god called Allah and 28 prophets. The belief in the holly book, Quran.
(C) They both believe in the same religion and god, but they disagree on who should be the religious leader, a direct descendant of Muhammed or anyone made up of a council.

The blinding hot sun,
Burns away at my lips.
Wishing for water.

I walk step by step
The dull brown dunes seize my legs.
I scream out for help,

But no one answers.
All alone as the sun drops.
Trapped for the night.

The Past and its Importance

аlcoron
Imagine someone saying to you, "Learning about the Byzantine Empire isn't very important since it's long gone!" What would you tell them in order to change their mind?
I would say, "We learn about the past but specifically in this case the Byzantine Empire so that we can understand more about ourselves as people. We also learn about the Byzantine Empire to see the effects it has played on todays modern world, to see the mistakes we made in the past so it doesn't happen again and to learn from them how to shape the future. We learn about the byzantine empire so that we can understand different cultures and races so that we do not judge and criticize there ways, which start conflicts.

To become a saint you have to be kind and gentle towards others, You have to sacrify your life for others, give your assets, and give your time and energy to serve God. This is all to be recognized by the church as a good person and servant of God. But for the church you to make you a saint they have to put you through a process called canonization where you can become a saint.

Saint George
